Vashon Heritage Museum
Built in 1907 by Norwegian immigrants, our museum home first served as a Lutheran church - a place of worship and study for themselves and their children
visit us
Enter the 1907 building and you’re in the story of a special island in the Salish Sea, a local story reflected regionally and in the evolution of American history.
Vashon’s story tracks diverse groups of people and their impact on natural history and use of resources over thousands of years, islanders whose conflicting visions for their lives and legacy drove off and inflicted misery on some, caused contentment for others, and eventually brought gentrification as people attempted to find their place in this part of the world, an island in the Salish Sea.
WHY VISIT
Every time you visit the museum, your connection to the island will deepen as you learn about those that came before and their impact on the environment, history, and culture of Vashon.
ENRICHING EXPERIENCE
The museum hosts both permanent and rotating collections that give deeper insight into the Island's history through interactive displays, visual artifacts, and extensive photographic exhibits.
LIVING HISTORY
Curated by passionate volunteers, many of whom are related to the first pioneers, the Museum reflects the living history of the Island and how the past connects to the present and future.
