We Are Reopening!

It has been almost 16 months since we closed our doors in 2020. During that time, we pivoted to an entirely online experience, providing monthly Museum Talks and a history tour of town. This week, we are excited to announce that the Vashon Heritage Museum will be re-opening with its regular hours.

The museum will be open to visitors Wednesday-Sunday, 1:00-4:00 pm. In addition, on Fridays and Saturdays through August 28, we will be open 6:00-10:00 pm for the Whale People: Protectors of the Sea exhibition.

In accordance with CDC guidelines, masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated. We ask that individuals who are not fully vaccinated wear masks, and we will have some available at the front desk.

Consider stopping by and re-visiting (or seeing for the first time) our award-winning exhibit IN and OUT: Being LGBTQ on Vashon Island.

This interactive and collaborative experience examines the long and quiet history of the LGBTQ+ community on Vashon, and will be open through Sept. 6, 2021.

As we close IN and OUT, we are currently hard at work on our new special exhibit Natural Wonder: An Island Shaped by Water, created in partnership with the Vashon Nature Center. If you visit our backyard, you can view the salmon art stream and the native species and geology areas. The entire exterior of Natural Wonder will open at the beginning of October, and the interior portion will open at the beginning of November.

Through August 28, we will also expand our hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00-10:00 pm for visitors to experience the fantastic exhibition Whale People: Protectors of the Sea. This exhibit features a 3,000-pound totem carved by the Lummi Nation House of Tears Carvers alongside an immersive IMAX-style film installation that tells the story of environmental emergency through the figure of the orca.

We will continue many of our offerings we started during the pandemic, including our monthly Museum Talks, offered on the second Thursday of each month, at 7:00 pm, for free on Zoom. You can also take a tour of town and engage in our special Main Street Virtual Tour.
