by Brian BrennoAs the daffodils begin to bloom and spring comes to the island the Heritage Museum has events planned for April and May. On
April 6th, the exhibit, “Joy and Heartache: The Japanese Americans on Vashon” opens. Curators Rita brogan, Bruce Haulman, Joe Okimoto and Meredith Yasui worked with seventeen island Japanese to tell the history of Japanese on Vashon. The exhibition draws from oral histories, historic photos, arts and artifacts that will bring this history alive, including a special reproduction of an internment barrack and personal histories of Japanese Americans living on Vashon today.On
May 15th a screening at the Vashon Theatre of the Documentary, Verona: The Story of the Everett Massacre will be held. The film blends interviews and firsthand accounts to uncover the story of a free-speech fight in Everett, Washington, that left seven dead on November 5,1916. Verona focuses on the people caught up in the confrontation including Vashon resident Captain Chauncey Wiman the captain of the Verona.
Wednesday May 9th is GIVE BIG DAY, a one-day giving campaign sponsored by the Seattle Foundation to
raise funds for local nonprofits. I urge all of our supporters to remember the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association on GIVE BIG DAY and pledge financial support to continue our mission to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit materials reflecting the unique history and culture of Vashon-Maury Island and to serve as a resource for the community and region through educational programs, the collection of documents and data, and the operation of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum.
