What's the backstory on the mammoth?
The first North American mammoths migrated across the Bearing Strait from Asia down through Alaska about 2 million years ago. Nearly all mammoths died out about 10,000 years ago. Anges Lane found a Columbian mammoth tooth in 1960 along the South Maury Island beach. This incredible fossil, now part of the museum's collection and on display in the permanent exhibit, is a reminder that a mammoth - 13 feet tall at the shoulder - possibly roamed our island.
