Speaker Bio

Captain Joe Wubbold, USCG (Ret), originally came from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was educated in various public and parochial schools, graduated from St. John's College High School in Washington, DC. Appointed to the Coast Guard Academy, graduated and commissioned an Ensign in the Coast Guard. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, and holds a Master's degree from Cambridge University.

He has commanded six different Coast Guard Cutters, the last being the Polar icebreaker NORTHWIND, in the Antarctic and the Great Lakes. He has also been a Group Commander with his headquarters in Saulte Ste Marie, MI, commanding CG units and people in Lakes Michigan, Superior and Huron.

Captain Joe served in the Vietnam war, being second in command of a Cutter operating in all four Corps areas. He became Captain of that Cutter on return to the United States at the end of that tour.

After completing his degree work in Cambridge, he managed the construction of the Shackleton Memorial Library, part of the Scott Polar Research Institute. When his work in Cambridge was done, he and his late wife Mary moved to the Magical Isle of Vashon. On Mary's death two years ago, Captain Joe decided that he would remain on Vashon, continuing the work started 20 years ago, including work with Point Robinson Light Station.

Bruce Haulman is an island historian who has authored several books about the history of Vashon-Maury Island. He serves as the Board President for the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.
